All Smiles in Winning the US Powerball Lottery Jackpot
US Powerball and Mega Millions award the biggest lottery jackpots in the world. The US Powerball‘s minimum Jackpot is $40 million with a potential of nine-figure prizes. The jackpot will roll over until all the numbers are matched. The biggest US Powerball jackpot to date was $590,500,000 and won in May 2013, it was one ticket in the state of Florida! Powerball now has the record for the largest jackpot (current being $243,000,000) ever won by a single ticket, and the second largest jackpot in the world (the largest was Mega Millions’ $656 million jackpot in March 2012 which was split by 3 winners).
The odds of winning any Powerball prize are now just 1 in 24.87, while the chances of winning the jackpot are 1 in 292,201,338.
Radical changes to Powerball were introduced in the fall of 2015 and it increased the chances of seeing even more huge Powerball jackpots.
The 2015 changes extended the main ball pool to 69 balls, adding another ten numbers. However, at the same time, the Powerball pool decreased from 35 to 26. This means that although the overall odds of winning the jackpot have increased to 1 in 292 million, the overall odds of winning any prize have decreased to 1 in 24.87. The first draw incorporating the changes took place on October 7th 2015 and also saw an increase in the tier three prize (matching 4+1) climb to $50,000.
The starting jackpot increase in 2012 along with the $1,000,000 prize for matching five numbers, meant there were more Powerball millionaires created. But it wasn’t just the big winners that were affected by these changes; the minimum prize win also increased to $4.
In order to win the Jackpot-one must match all 5 regular numbers drawn along with an additional number also known as the ‘Powerball’. There are nine ways to win in the Us Powerball.
